Why Spending Local Matters More Than Ever

Every Purchase Has a Purpose

As we move into the holiday season, the Swanton Area Chamber of Commerce is reminding residents to Shop Local in Swanton, Ohio. Every purchase has power. When you choose to spend local, you’re not just making a transaction—you’re making an investment in the community we all share.

According to Shop Local First research, for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $68 stays right here in our community. That’s money that helps fund local schools, support small business owners, sponsor youth sports teams, and create local jobs.

When those same dollars are spent with national chains or online retailers, only a fraction—about $43 or less—remains in the local economy.

The Ripple Effect of Shopping Local in Swanton, Ohio

The impact goes far beyond one purchase:

  • Local businesses reinvest locally. They hire area contractors, accountants, designers, and suppliers.
  • They give back. Small businesses sponsor events, volunteer at fundraisers, and contribute to local nonprofits and community programs.
  • They strengthen relationships. Shopping local builds trust between neighbors and business owners—something large corporations simply can’t replicate.

Businesses Supporting Businesses

Local business owners play a key role too. Choosing local vendors for bookkeeping, signage, printing, cleaning, catering, or professional services multiplies the benefit.
When local businesses buy from one another, it amplifies that economic return and helps stabilize our local economy.

If every small business in the Swanton area shifted even 10% more of their purchasing to another local business, the collective impact would be substantial.

How to Participate This Season

  • Shop at local boutiques, restaurants, and service providers.
  • Choose local contractors and vendors for your business needs.
  • Promote fellow Chamber members on social media.
  • Encourage customers to use the hashtag #ShopSwanton or #SmallBusinessSeason.

The goal isn’t just to shop small one weekend a year—it’s to make supporting local a year-round habit.

Join Us in Strengthening Swanton

Every dollar that stays local helps build a stronger, more vibrant community. Whether you’re a resident shopping for holiday gifts or a business choosing where to spend your budget, remember: for every $100 spent locally, $68 stays right here at home.
